Not well liked by the crews because of some obscuration, but made a damn good sighting point for the FLAK batteries. Major flak emplacements relied on Radar, and crews hopefully confused that by throwing "chaff" or "window" out. Each bundle of the "window" appeared to radar as a plane or planes. You could see the result as the concentration of FLAK bursts moved away from its' original target. My recollection of "window" was tiny strips of aluminum foil backed by brown paper. These were folded length wise into a tiny "L" shaped form. They were somewhere about 7 to 9" long. A case held many thousands of these that scattered in the air. Al Saldarini |
