MISSION NBR. 61

TARGET: Brasov, Rumania - Northwest Marshalling Yard

I. CHRONOLOGY
Thirty-nine B-24's took off at 0800-0828 hours to bomb the Northwest Marshalling Yard at Brasov, Rumania. One returned early. Thirty-seven dropped 90 tons of 500 lb G.P. bombs on the target at 1147-1150 hours from 20,000 - 21,500 feet. Due to bomb rack malfunctions, two other jettisoned bombs leaving target area on the return course. Thirty-eight returned to base at 1700 hours

II. ROUTE AND ASSAULT
Rendezvoused with the 449th Bomb Group over Manduria at 0856 hours at 6000 feet. Other groups of the Wing were joined on line to San Vito D' Normanni. Hence to Radovici, to turn point to Hinova. The turn was somewhat short of the I.P. (Sercaia), thus bringing the formation into the target on a heading of 85 degrees. Rally was right and course back was a reciprocal of the route out. General escort was observed at times here noted: 30 to 40 P-38's at 0945 hours leaving at 0950 hours; 20 to 25 P-47's, withdrawing at 1330 hours; 12 P-51's were observed over the target area at 1150 hours.

III. RESULTS
The greatest concentration of our bombs was about 600-800 feet north of the aiming pint. The target area was hit hard and many fires were seen among the cars in the marshalling yard. Photo coverage indicates 75 hits in NE and SW end of marshalling yard and direct hits on shop type buildings. The target was hazy from previous bombing.

IV. ENEMY RESISTANCE
A. Fighters: In all approximately 10 to 15 enemy aircraft were seen. Of these 8 ME-109's were in the target area and 6 mixed ME-109's and FW-109's. In the target area, 2 yellow-nosed ME-109's attacked our formation for 5-6-7 o'clock high. Followed shortly thereafter by 2 FW-190's using the same tactics. The attacks were not pressed although the FW-190's fired 20mm cannon and rockets in their single pass. We suffered no injury but one of our ships claim damaged to a ME-109.
B. Flak: Medium, accurate, heavy type flak was encountered over the target, consisting of black and grey puffs. One of our ships was holed.

V. OBSERVATIONS
None.

VI. CASUALTIES
