M/Sgt. Herbert Chester Jr.
722nd Squadron
December 24, 1941,
after graduating from basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi
Herb was trained as a flight mechanic, and as he had enlisted prior to the start of the war he had spent a lot of his early service days going to various maintenance schools for engines, hydraulics, electronics, avionics and weapons.
Before joining the 450th, he was assigned to a crash recovery team.
Upon assignment to the 450th, Herb was a Master Sergeant and was assigned as crew chief to the aircraft 42-7714, "Gallopin' Ghost", of the 722nd Squadron.
Herb was awarded the Bronze Star, is very proud of his service, and feels lucky to have been with such a great bunch of guys.
