Wednesday 12th

1st Mission – Target for Today: ME-109 factory, Weiner  Neustadt, Austria.

Intense flak over the target.  Good fighter cover.  C-38's.  Came back on three engines but made it O.K. Went to Sava again with Bill.

Thursday 13th

Target for Today: Airfield, Budapest, Hungary.

Flak was of moderate intensity and not too accurate.  C-47 escort.  Developed a gas leak, but not bad.  One B-24 blew up.  Must have received a direct flak hit.

Bad weather so we didn't fly.  Went to the show with Bill in the afternoon.  After the show we went to Manduria after our laundry.

Friday 21st

No mission today.  Took my laundry in to Manduria.  Went to the opening of the dayroom after supper.  They had cognac, champagne, ?, gin, coke, ice cream & cake.  A pretty good party.

Sunday 23rd

Target for Today:  Heinkel Factory, Schwechat, Austria.

We got over the target about 1430.  Just as we were getting ready to drop our bombs, the entire electrical system went out.  The flak was so thick it looked as if you could get out and walk on it.  It was bouncing our plane all over the sky.  We could hear it tearing holes all through the ship.  Carlson salvoed the bombs, and we got through it without anyone getting hurt, but all our turrets were out, all the instruments, interphone, & everything else electrical.  We were cruising at 2500 RPM & couldn't change it, so we came back in auto-lean.  Must have had a hold in a fuel cell because we ran out of gas about 15 miles from the field, and had to crash land with a dead stick.  Jeff & Andy did a good job of it.  Barbee was braced at the front end of the catwalk, and when we hit, the nose wheel came through & killed him instantly.  The rest of us were only bruised and shaken.  We came back in a truck, ate supper, read awhile, then went to bed.

Monday 24th

Checked with the medics today, and all of us are O.K.  We'll probably gegt a couple days rest before we fly again.  Went in to Sava with Bill.

Tuesday 25th

Well, the boys went on a raid today, and it was a rough one.  Lost three ships from our squadron.  Bill went down today, too.  It's hard to believe, but I think he bailed out O.K.  Maybe he made it to Switzerland.

Wednesday 26th

Didn't fly again today.  Lay around the tent, read and after supper went to the show.  Dick Powell & Dorothy Lamour in "Ridin' High".

Thursday 27th

10 - Friday 28th

Target for Today:  City & Harbor Installations, Ortabella, Italy

Saturday 6th

Well, it was a rough day.  We were hit by about 75 ME-109's just before we got to the target.  They knocked down six planes out of the group.  I got one ME and one probable.  The flak over the target was heavy, intense and accurate, & we were in it almost 20 minutes.  Six ships cracked up when up got back.
