T/Sgt. Clifford W. Knappenberger
720th Squadron


Clifford William Knappenberger was born 9 June 1921 in Westmoreland County, PA.
He is the son of John Jacob Shafter Knappenberger (1898-1950) grandson of John Hester Knappenberger (1869-1939) and descends from Conrad Knappenberger of Westmoreland County, PA.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in October 1942 and became a flight engineer/gunner on a B-24 bomber.
He first flew 28 missions with the 15th Air Force/450th bomb group out of north Africa and Manduria, Italy.
He then flew with the 8th Air Force, 446th bomb group out of Norwich, England flying 25 missions for a total of 53 missions.
He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 7 oak leaf clusters, the European, African, Middle East medal with 5 bronze stars among other honors.
Cliff was discharged in August 1945 as a Tech Sergeant after earning 138 discharge points!
