Sgt. Chester McGuigan



Chester Retzer McGuigan was born on 05 July 1913 in Quarryville, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from Quarryville High School in 1931.
When World War II broke out, he owned a restaurant called Eat at Chet's in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Initially rejected for military service on medical grounds, he joined the Army Air Forces in 1942.
He attended technical school at Chanute Field, Illinois, in the specialized motor vehicle course.
In 1943, he was posted to the 722nd Squadron, 450th Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force in Italy as part of the ground crew, operating and maintaining refueling vehicles.
He was promoted to Sergeant and awarded a number of decorations, including meritorius unit citations and a good conduct medal.
Upon returning home in 1945, he married his sweetheart, Mildred Nissly Eby, and raised three daughters.
He worked as a car fleet dealer and institutional food salesman before retiring and dedicating himself to volunteer work.
Chester took his last flight on 25 March 2002 in Lititz, Pennsylvania following a long illness.
